Berlioz Te Deum - Eliahu Inbal - CD
Hector Berlioz's 'Te Deum', composed 12 years later, appears as a parallel work to his massive Requiem. Like the Requiem, this work is characterized by musical monumentalism: with a triple choir, a large orchestral ensemble, an organ and a solo tenor, the 'Te Deum' is, however, both more nuanced and more colorful than the Requiem. The 'Messe solennelle' can also be heard here, as the 'little brother of the Requiem', as Berlioz called his piece to Franz Liszt. It is not clear what prompted Berlioz to compose the 'Te Deum'. Some passages were in fact intended for a work entitled 'Fête musicale funèbre', written in 1835. This became the 'Symphonie funèbre at triomphale'. And the passage illustrating General Louis-Bonaparte could be the entrance to the 'Te Deum' as a hidden tribute to the new emperor.
