Stabat Mater by Rossini - CD
In his magnificent setting of Stabat Matter, the meditation on the mourning of Mary at the Cross, Rossini respects the sacred gravity of the text while illuminating it with the flair so familiar from his operas, both comic and serious. Under the direction of a starry quartet of bel canto singers and the forces of Santa Cecilia, Rome, Antonio Pappano considers the work a precursor to Verdi's Requiem: "The despair and the drama are already there".
