The works of Jean-Louis FONCINE are well known to scout readers. However, this one has a very different character. It surveys in a way the major events of international scouting. From the pioneers and at their head, Baden Powell, to the recent manifestations of the immense association of "Scouts of the whole world", FONCINE traces here sure lines, of anecdotal character, reflecting better than long developments the progression of the movement and its fidelity to its initial goals. The tasty passages are not lacking where the author recounts in his direct and familiar style the small misfortunes and the great joys which mark a scout existence, as much that of Baden Powell as of anonymous scouts. But everywhere the same spirit remains: spirit of discovery, service and fraternity. It is not even the fine illustrations of the volume which do not offer the same freshness of tone.
