An original and renewed presentation of the Maredsous Bible. Easy to read, with very legible characters, it takes up the pastoral notes of the Pastoral Bible in the form of small introductions to the various biblical passages. The translation, studied for a clear and fluid public reading, remains very much that of Fr. Passelecq as revised in 1968 and corrected several times.
THE BIBLE AT MAREDSOUS
Based on a long monastic tradition in which liturgical prayer is the daily bread, the reading of the Bible is at the heart of every Christian life and therefore of an authentic Benedictine life.
The study and diffusion of the Bible has been a permanent concern of the Community of Maredsous since the Missal of the Faithful by Dom Gérard van Caloen (1882) or the publication of the preaching of Blessed Columba Marmion, astonishingly nourished by Sacred Scripture for his time (1917-1923).
Scientific research has benefited from the work of Frs. De Bruyne (revision of the Vulgate), Duesberg (The Inspired Scribes), Fransen (Florus of Lyon) and Bogaert (professor of Old Testament exegesis at the Catholic University of Louvain).
As for the Catholic biblical movement after the Divino afflante encyclical (1943), it was strongly stimulated by the work of spreading the Bible to the French-speaking Christian world through the publication of the Bible de Maredsous (1950) by Dom Paul (Georges) Passelecq as well as by the publications of Dom Célestin (Paul) Charlier: La lecture chrétienne de la Bible (1950) and the review and collection Bible et Vie Chrétienne (1952-1972).
After a revised edition of the Maredsous Bible (1968), this tradition continued with the application of computer technology to biblical work from 1971, with the publication of the Table Pastorale de la Bible (1974) and the creation of the Centre Informatique et Bible under the direction of Dom R.-Ferdinand Poswick (1979).
