Text in French
Of all the Old Testament writings referred to in the New, the book of Psalms is most often cited. Called in Hebrew the "book of praise", this collection of poems and songs contains the traditional prayers of the people of Israel. We call these hymns psalms, after the Greek word for them. They were regularly used in Jesus' time during pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Temple liturgies, Sabbath synagogue assemblies, and in private devotion. Among the Sacred Scriptures of the Jews, the book of Psalms was the best known and most beloved. In quoting it, reference was first made to David (Acts 2:25-34; Mt 22:43), the King-Prophet, who is considered the founder of the genre.
