Discovered in a manuscript in Montpellier, Bishop Timothy's Book on the Passover is an exceptionally rich source on a little-known and complex subject: the Easter controversies of the early 4th century in the East.
This pastoral letter, written in Greek by a certain Bishop Timothy to an unidentifiable community, and transmitted in Latin, is a primary source concerning four deviances relating to Easter celebrations, deviances whose presence in Anatolia in the first quarter of the fourth century it attests to: one of them had never even been recorded until now. Through them, the author also gives a glimpse of a complex political situation, whether in relations between Christian communities, between Christians and Jews, or between Christianity and the civil administration.
The presence of an excerpt from the work in St. Augustine's notebooks illustrates its role in the history of the texts and the importance of the paschal question in terms not only of the liturgical calendar, but also of religious identity and exegesis.
Pierre Chambert-Protat, a member of the French School of Rome, is the author of a thesis on Florus of Lyon (EPHE - Lyon 2, 2016) and has published several works on this author and on the Carolingian period.
Camille Gerzaguet, lecturer in Latin language and literature at the Université Paul Valéry - Montpellier 3, has published her thesis in the collection (Ambroise de Milan, La fuite du siècle, SC 576), as well as several works on Florus of Lyon and on the exegetical and philosophical traditions of the Latin Fathers.
