"Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me," Jesus tells us. The Way of the Cross is to help us internalize this invitation and respond to it, especially on Fridays and during Lent.
The practice of the Way of the Cross originated in the pilgrimages to Jerusalem at the end of the Middle Ages: following in the footsteps of Jesus, the faithful slowly retraced the path of the Passion, meditating on the stages (the "stations") one by one. Particularly under the influence of the Franciscan family, the Way of the Cross was introduced in the West as a sort of miniature pilgrimage, with the faithful reproducing the Jerusalem procession inside the church, with its songs, historical reminders and moments of meditation.
From one century to another and from one country to another, the Way of the Cross has had many variations, the most common form for three centuries being that of the fourteen stations represented on the walls of our churches.
The greatest freedom is left to the faithful to organize their Way of the Cross, at church, at home or elsewhere. "At the School of the Saints", we offer a text per station, borrowed from the great authors of the Christian spiritual tradition. For a public practice of this Way of the Cross, we suggest taking particular care in reading these texts, and following it with about two minutes of silent meditation.
