Born into a Jewish family, raised in agnosticism, Simone Weil was 29 years old in 1938 when a mystical experience, in a moment of intense suffering, revealed to her the love of Christ. In 1940, she read the Bhagavad-Gîtâ and felt "while reading these marvelous words with such a Christian sound" that "we owe to religious truth much more than the adherence granted to a beautiful poem".
