Small Icon - Presentation of Mary in the Temple
This small wooden Orthodox icon depicts the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple, according to the Protevangelium of James.
The Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple is an episode from apocryphal texts, notably the Protevangelium of James. According to this tradition, Mary, a miraculous child given to Anna and Joachim after years of infertility, was offered to God at the age of three, in gratitude. Taken to the Temple in Jerusalem, she was welcomed by the priest Zechariah. She was presented with a role in the redemption of Israel. She lived there until the age of 12, dedicated to prayer and purity. This event is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on November 21st, as a symbol of total dedication to God. This scene symbolizes purity, faith, and devotion from childhood. A discreet spiritual object, rich in symbolism, to keep at home or to give as a gift.
